I’m not going to lie — when I read Roy’s email, it brought a tear to my eye. I had to pause and take a deep breath.

His message was simple:

“I would like you to be there to officially open this bridge.”

I have never been someone who needs to shout about what I have done or seek recognition for my work. We do this role because we care deeply about our communities. But the respect, kindness and support shown to me by residents, organisations and council officers throughout this journey has been truly overwhelming.

This bridge is far more than just a structure. It is a lifeline for so many people. It provides a vital shortcut for walkers, helps children get to school safely, and allows residents easy access to local amenities such as Tesco. It is part of everyday life for our community.

Roy first contacted me about the bridge some time ago, and I had already obtained a quote knowing that this project could be delivered through the £175,000 budget allocation. When the bridge later collapsed and had to be closed, our Environmental Management team and council officers were absolutely fantastic. They acted quickly, worked tirelessly and ensured the project was completed so residents could once again use this important route.

As we officially opened the bridge, Roy turned to me and once again said, “It had to be you.”

Those words will stay with me for a very long time.

To have the honour of officially opening this bridge during my year as Mayoress made the occasion even more special and emotional. Moments like this remind me why public service matters. It is about listening, caring and making a difference to the everyday lives of the people we represent.

I will always be grateful to the residents who placed their trust in me and chose me to represent them over the last five years. It has been one of the greatest honours of my life, and I will cherish memories like this forever.
