Kellett Street Allotments
The Kellett Street Allotments form part of the Growth Project, an initiative that promotes mental and physical wellbeing through meaningful outdoor activity and community involvement.
Operating largely through the generous donation of materials and support from local businesses, the project demonstrates strong partnership working and a shared commitment to community benefit. This collaborative approach has enabled continual improvement of the site despite limited funding.
Situated on a flood plain, the allotments face ongoing environmental challenges. These constraints have been met with resilience and thoughtful management, ensuring the site remains usable, safe and productive while respecting the natural landscape.
The allotments provide a supportive environment for individuals experiencing mental health challenges, offering opportunities to engage in gardening, food growing and wider community activities that build confidence, encourage social connection and improve wellbeing.
The quality and impact of the site have been consistently recognised, achieving an ‘Outstanding’ award at the Britain in Bloom competition for seven consecutive years — a reflection of sustained effort, adaptability and community pride
