In 2018, the centenary year marking the end of the First World War, it was felt that Castleton deserved a War Memorial — a place where residents could pay their respects and reflect on the lives of those lost. It was something the community had waited for since 1918.
The project came together remarkably quickly. Within a month, an uprooted tree stump was removed, the area excavated, a concrete base installed, and a central memorial stone positioned and inscribed. The site was then enhanced with carefully chosen planting to complement the setting.
In September 2018, the memorial stone was blessed during a special multi-faith service attended by more than 200 members of the local community and formally dedicated to Castleton’s fallen.
Since then, stone flags generously donated by H Bell and Sons and metal railings constructed by Rochdale Training have been added to protect and enhance the memorial.
