In 2018, the year of the centenary of the end of World War One, we decided that Castleton deserved a War Memorial for residents to pay their respects and reflect on the lives of those lost. Something that they had been waiting for since 1918.
The parts all fell into place and within a month. An uprooted tree stump had been ground out, the area excavated, concrete base set and a centrepiece stone placed and inscribed. Flowers were planted to complement the theme.
In September 2018, the stone was blessed at a special multi-faith service attended by 200 members of the local community and dedicated to Castleton’s fallen.
Stone flags donated by H Bell and Sons, and metal railings built by Rochdale Training have since been added to protect the display.
